Joining light metals with polymer composites through metal overcasting

This work investigates a unique technique to join aluminum (Al) and magnesium (Mg) alloys carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites without the use of adhesives or mechanical fasteners. The joints were made using an overcasting where molten cast around high pressure die casting method. Rapid cooling during allowed composite be embedded inside metal causing any gross damage former even though temperature exceeded melting point matrix by several 100’s deg. C. metal/composite interface was examined optical scanning electron microscopy x-ray imaging, joint strength through tensile testing. Although evidence visible in images microscopy, this limited CFRP surface only while bulk section coupons retained their overall shape integrity. Preliminary tension tests on Al/CFRP showed degradation it failed few mm outside joint. suggests that process needs further optimization minimize thermal excursion Nevertheless, shows great promise as joining with application fabricating light-weight structures for automotive transportation industries.
